Scotland’s Independent Music Scene

Scotland’s boasts a huge number of musicians across its central belt, and the independent music scene is always in full swing. So whether you are staying in, or visiting Glasgow or Edinburgh, there are always super cool local bands to check out.

The Glaswegian Chvrches is a trio of electro pop which features former Aereogramme members. The group is getting extremely popular, especially since their tour osos2pening for Depeche Mode and their stint on Jimmy Fallon’s Late Night Show in the U.S.

Another fab group are the cool Kilsyth band Twilight Sad. This post punk group are renowned for their dark compositions, guitar and dark synths. Their hits ‘Prostitute’ and ‘Another Bed’ are typical of their unique style.

Admiral Fallow is another favourite for anyone who likes music and lyrics with moody dark connotations fused with a touch of folk. And if you are a folk lover, then Scotland is abundant with this genre which is so close to Scottish culture. First rate independent folk and rock bands to watch out for are King Creosote, Meursault, and Frightened Rabbit.

The renowned noisy threesome The Paws, are based in Glasgow but hail from the Highlands. They are cool surf punks known for their love of distorted uplifting pop songs. Cokefloat, their initial album, is a good indicator of what you will get if you check out one of their popular venues. The voodoo groove of Golden Teacher, the eclectic house and techno group, is another great gig to visit.

A trip to see the independent cult folk singer, Withered Hand, is a another option for a fun musical night out. Hand boasts his own record label, and now has two albums out. He entertained a packed house at the Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh, where he shared the stage with Eugene Kelly.
